Have You Chosen the Wrong Time to Start a Side Hustle?
Ever thought that it might not be the right season of life to start a side hustle?
Have you been beating yourself up because you’ve tried all the time management hacks known to man, but nothing’s working? You just can’t find time for your side hustle, no matter what you do. There may just be a very good reason for this, which has nothing to do with how many tricks and techniques you implement.
Read on to find out why sometimes it just isn’t the right season of life to start something new. Learn how to tell whether never is going to be the right time, or whether it’s just now.
I want to tell you about my friend; let’s call her Mary. Mary is passionate about helping women embrace and celebrate midlife. She wants to share her knowledge and skills with the world; to help other women achieve what she has accomplished. The problem is that the time that Mary has chosen to begin this new venture is also the time she has started a new job. And not just any old job. A very challenging job where she is having to develop new skills and increase her knowledge. Let’s just say it’s been a steep learning curve and it isn’t over yet. Mary feels like others are leaving her behind. That she isn’t making the progress she wants to see in her side hustle, because she isn’t taking the actions she needs to take. The problem is that because the tasks in her job are unfamiliar they are taking more time than they would do if she had been at it for a decade. Report writing is spilling over into evenings and weekends, leaving little time for anything else. Now Mary is determined not to ditch her side hustle dreams, so she’s persevering and celebrating the small steps that she is able to make, but I wouldn’t blame her if she wanted to give up.
Does any of this sound familiar? If so, then don’t be too hard on yourself. There’s nothing wrong with re-evaluating where you are and making the decision to put your side hustle on hold for a while until your life can accommodate it.
Now I don’t want to discourage you from starting your side hustle at this time and I’m not saying it isn’t possible, it is, people have done it, but it’s hard. I just want you to think about this if you’re really struggling to find time for your side hustle.
A word of caution though. There’s a danger that if you’re reading this you might use it as an excuse for your disorganised ways. You might be telling yourself, ‘Oh yes, that’s it. I’m in the wrong season of life to build a side hustle’. But are you really? Has a major life event just taken place? Examples of these are:
Having a baby
Getting married
Moving house
Losing a loved one
If none of those events, or nothing which would have a similar impact on your life, has happened, then you just need a bit of help learning how plan, be organised, implement routines and set boundaries.
